AIS is the abbreviation for Automatic Identification System. It is a ship reporting system based on VHF radio frequency, used to enhance maritime traffic safety and efficiency. The AIS system can transmit real-time dynamic information of ships, such as position, heading, speed, etc., as well as static information, such as ship name, call sign, ship type, dimensions, etc., and also share voyage-related information, such as destination, estimated time of arrival, etc., with other ships and shore stations. The AIS system is an important component of the GMDSS system and a significant data source for the Maritime Information System (MIS).
